Our First Field Trip

We left Long about 9:10 this morning, and we were back by 10:00. So this was a very short field trip, but it was absolutely fantastic! We rode the bus to Krispy Kreme, and learned all about how they make the donuts.

The boys and girls watched the donuts pass through the stages of production, and met the manager of the store, Mr. John. He gave them hats to wear, and information pages to show each of the seven steps of how they make donuts.

After talking through each step of the process, the boys and girls got to feel the donut dough. We decided that it was a little bit like our playdough.

 We were so excited to taste the donuts, too!

 

Mr. John showed us the paddle that they use to mix the donuts...it's huge! He said that the children would even be able to sit inside the bowl, it's so big!

This field trip is the kick-off to our new writing unit. We're learning all about informational writing! We'll be writing "How To" books. When you write "How To" books about how to do something, it's important to tell about each step. Seeing first-hand how to make donuts gives us all a common experience to draw from. And it was a very delicious experience!
