Weekly Peep Report

Happy Friday, Kindergarten Families!

We've really loved celebrating Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day in Kindergarten this week! Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Manson, and all of our party helpers, for organizing a terrific party! The children were so excited about it, and had a great time!

Please remember that there is no school on Monday. It's Presidents' Day, and we'll be learning all about the Presidents next week. (When I told the children that, one little girl raised her hand and said, "I'm going to be the President when I grow up." I told her that she definitely has my vote!)

There are LOTS of new pictures this week. When you get to the end of this page, please select "View Older Posts" to see the rest of the pictures. I hope you enjoy seeing the children in action!

Kindergarten Weekly Report
February 12, 2016

ABC's and 123's

Reading and Writing:
In our reading groups, we've continued working on reading and spelling CVC words this week. (We are learning to blend sounds together.) As we keep working to build confidence, and develop reading fluency, we're working hard to remember our reading strategies. A big one is to "get your mouth ready" when you're reading a word, and to think of what would make sense in the story. Look at the pictures to help! When you do those three things, you can usually figure out the word.

We didn't clean out our writing folders this week, as we were too busy with different projects for the special days this week. We'll try to send some stories home next week. (It's hard for me to part with them, I'll admit!)

Please keep reading with your child each day, and write down the books you read on the February Reading Log. (If you haven't set a monthly goal yet, please do so. You can try to beat your previous month's books, or set a minimum goal of 15-20 books.)

Social Studies:
Next week on Friday, we're having a special Teddy Bear Day. I'll tell you more next week about how this relates to our Social Studies lessons. Please plan to have your child bring a teddy bear to school Friday. If you don't have a teddy bear, I will have one for your child to borrow. It is important that the animal be a bear, and not something else. Thanks for your help with this!

Math:
This week we'll be working on adding with money! As we learn all about the presidents, the Peeps will examine different types of coins so that they can sort them, and begin to tell them apart. We will primarily be adding pennies, but students who are ready will work with nickels and dimes, too!

At home, you can practice coin recognition with your child. Work on the names and values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
