Writing Workshop

Here are some snapshots from Writing Workshop this week. Remember that writing levels and reading levels often go hand in hand. As children gain more confidence and experience with sight words and letter sounds, they can use that knowledge when writing! It's fantastic to see the growth that they're making!!

from "How To Be Safe at Recess"
First, find a good friend. Next, if you find a good friend, that's good. Then you will play!

This is the cover of the book "How to Not Get in Trouble"
(Trouble spelled JL...which "tr" is sort of like "j" depending on how you say it!)

"Do not push someone on the playground."

Here's an excerpt from another book on the same subject. (We used our real-life experiences this week in our writing, We've had some classroom meetings about playground safety.)

This is a book about how to make valentines. Step 1"Get supplies. Valentine supplies."

And even "How To" books sometimes turn into personal narratives. It's hard to keep the two types of writing separate. This says, "After we laughed (at the game they were playing), we went home."

The "conventions" that we're working on at this time of year are spacing between words, using one capital letter at the beginning of our ideas, and using an ending punctuation mark. That's a tall order! It takes lots of writing experience to get to that point. I'm so proud of the writing effort that I'm seeing from the children. They are working hard each day!
