Weekly Peep Report

Happy Friday, Kindergarten Families!

Oh my, what an amazingly busy and wonderful week we have had this week! It was the 100th Day of Kindergarten (featuring our 100 Day Fashion Show and breakfast at the 100 Day Cafe), and Groundhog Day! We've learned all about shadows!

Please note that there's some important information about Valentine's Day and our classroom valentines in the "Upcoming Events" section of the report.

Kindergarten Weekly Report
February 5, 2016

ABC's and 123's

Progress reports are coming home in your child's binder today. Please take a look to see what areas your child may need to practice at home. Please remember that progress reports are just a quick snapshot of how we're doing. I have not completed individual assessments in all areas (such as graphing, or fluently adding and subtracting within 5). We've got more learning to do during the next few weeks of 3rd Quarter!

Reading and Writing:
On Progress Reports, I wrote down the level of books that your child is currently reading. The expectation for Kindergartners during 3rd Quarter is level C3. If you would like to learn more about what the different levels look like, please click here to see a PDF with different examples of leveled books.

In writing, we're working hard on "How To" stories. This week, we learned how to add words like first, next, then, and last to our writing!  (Next week, we'll clean out our folders a little, and bring some of our books home for you to keep. That will help you get a clearer idea of what your child can do.) We've written some terrific books about playground safety! Be sure to check out the blog post all about it!

Math:
This week, we continued working with addition, but our focus was on 100 and counting to 100 by tens and ones. Please keep practicing at home when you can.

Science:
We know how shadows happen! A shadow is made any time that something gets between a light source and the place it is shining on. When your hand gets between the light and the wall, it makes a shadow! When a groundhog gets between the sun and the ground, there will be a shadow! We were excited to find out that the groundhog didn't see his shadow. We'd love to see an early spring! (Well, some of the children did tell me that they'd like to have more snow to play in before springtime.)

Valentine's Day Notes

On Valentine’s Day, before our classroom party in the afternoon, we will take time to pass valentines out to our friends. Your child will need to have valentines to pass out to all classmates. Please be sure not to leave anyone out. Our kindergartners are learning all about letter formation and writing names with a capital letter. So please let this be a chance for them to practice their skills and fill out their valentine cards themselves. They need to fill out the “to” and “from” on each card. This may take more than one sitting, so be sure to give your child plenty of time to finish his/her valentine cards!

Please plan to make a Valentine mailbox at home for your child to use. You could use a shoebox, cereal box, tissue box, or other similarly sized item to use for your child’s mailbox. Be as creative as you would like to be, and use any materials that you care to use. There are LOTS and LOTS of ideas on Pinterest and elsewhere on the Internet. You could also purchase valentine cards that even come with a mailbox…those are available at Wal-Mart and Party City, and other places, too! You can send Valentine mailboxes to school as they are finished. You do not have to wait until Valentine’s Day.

Thank you so much for your help at home with this fun project. We hope you will enjoy making a mailbox with your child!

Enjoy your weekend, and if you're a football fan, have fun watching the Super Bowl--and the commercials!
