Happy Sunday, Kindergarten Families!
I was really excited to watch the children performing today! They were terrific!! (Please look for pictures coming to the blog soon...I have LOTS, going all the way back to Halloween.)
We're back to our regular schedule on Monday. (No more music rehearsals.) The children will have gym. Please have them wear tennis shoes.
Our Veterans Day assembly will take place on Wednesday, November 11, from 9:00-10:00 A.M. in the gym. We will have a few Kindergarten leaders holding flags as veterans and guests enter the building. If your child has a veteran coming, then he/she will be able to attend the assembly. Otherwise, we will be watching from the classroom, as we're expecting the gym to be very full of people!
Our class is entered into the Six Flags Read to Succeed program. The children can earn tickets to Six Flags this summer for reading a total of 6 hours between now and the time the program ends. More information is coming soon...but all of the reading you're doing now for our reading logs will definitely double-count! So please keep reading to meet your November goals. I am so happy with the way many of you are trying to top your previous month's score! Way to go!!
Kindergarten Weekly Report
November 8, 2015
ABC's and 123's
Reading: Everyone is working very harding during Guided Reading groups! We're reading lots of new books, practicing our reading strategies, and working hard to master all sight words and letter sounds. At home, please keep working with your child each night, even for just a few minutes, to build mastery. (Two minutes daily is really more effective than 15 minutes once or twice a week.) Keep reading, too! Even one book a night is wonderful, especially as the holiday season starts to get underway.
Writing: In Writer's Workshop this week, we've been building our stamina as writers. We're working on personal narratives that have a beginning, middle, and ending. Many of the children are using letters when writing words...some are stretching words and writing all of the sounds they hear. Others are writing the first sound, or the first and last sound. Still others are writing random letters to represent the writing. (Sound matching comes after we've mastered letter sounds; that's why we have to know them!) No matter where we are in our writing, we're all showing terrific growth as writers! One challenge we have is being able to read what we write. The pictures on the page also have to clearly show what the story is about. At home, you can help encourage your child to write stories, make lists for you, or write letters to relatives. This is a great time to write a Christmas list, too! Ask your child to draw a picture of the things he/she wants, and stretch the words to write down the sounds that he/she hears. (Be very accepting of your child's efforts, and praise more than you correct. As writers, we have to feel good about what we're able to do, and kindergartners are often very sensitive about doing it "right.")

Math: We've been learning all about the characteristics of shapes. Shapes can be described by counting their sides, and their corners, or vertices. We had a lot of fun building different 2-dimensional shapes using playdough and toothpicks this week! We've also been working on counting to 100 by tens, comparing quantities by using the words "greater," "less," and "equal." and writing numbers to 10 correctly.
Science: This week, we learned about the colors of the seasons, characteristics of each season, and spelling color words. Some of our friends have spent extra time trying to learn the color word songs, because they want to spell color words correctly! That makes me very proud!
