The Perfect Thanksgiving Menu

During Writer's Workshop, the boys and girls made a Thanksgiving menu! These menus have their very favorite dishes! We practiced stretching out words, and writing down the sounds that we hear. We had lots of fun sharing and comparing together! Look at these menus! They'll make you hungry!

Writing From Long Ago

We've been learning all about how life is different today from life long ago. The Peeps tried some writing with a quill today! It's tricky, but fun!

Weekly Peep Report

Happy Friday, Kindergarten Families!

We've had a wonderful Veterans Day week this week, learning all about our country and symbols of America! We're already excited about our Early Release Day on Wednesday next week...the Peeps know that means Show and Tell! Please supervise your child's choice for Show and Tell, and listen as they practice what they might say about why they chose to bring that item. Remember that Show and Tell objects need to fit in backpacks easily, and not be breakable, spill-able, or expensive. (Anything can and does happen in Kindergarten, you know!)

The LPTO sponsored Kindergarten VIP Breakfast is Tuesday morning at 8:00 A.M. if you're planning to attend with your child.

Please look for second quarter progress reports at the end of next week.

Kindergarten Weekly Report

Gobble, Gobble! I thought I heard a turkey...but I don't see any turkeys!

We've had some absolutely amazing characters come to Kindergarten! There is a huge display in the hallway leading to the library! We are so proud of all of the unique, creative turkeys in disguise!  If you haven't completed this project with your child, please plan to send your turkey back to school next week. There is still time to add your child's turkey!

ABC's and 123's

Reading and Social Studies:
We have been so interested to learn about the symbols of America this week, and about the branches of the military. "Our Country" was our focus in reading and social studies. We learned that a non-fiction book doesn't always have photographs. Sometimes non-fiction books can have drawings, and you have to think carefully about whether the book has true facts, or a make-believe story. We've read lots of non-fiction books this week about the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, U.S. Flag, and the White House.

The Peeps made beautiful flags and hand-print bald eagles to decorate the hallway for Veterans Day. We also wrote messages for our veterans, and drew symbols of America on handprints to make a big flag with the help of the other kindergarten classes!

Please keep reading each day to meet your reading goal for November, and keep working on sight words at home to be sure that they are automatic. We need to know these words as soon as we see them! The first and second quarter word lists are in your child's binder. Be sure your child has mastered the first quarter list first, and then work on the second quarter list.

Math:
We will be wrapping up our study of two-dimensional shapes this week, and continuing to develop the concept of "greater than," "less than," and "equal to." Each day, the children love comparing numbers on our lunch graph. Today we had 9 Peeps order pizza, and 9 bringers. One friend wrote 9 = 9 on the whiteboard! (On our lunch graph, one friend was "milk only" and one was absent, in case you were wondering.) We've learned how to write "greater than," "less than," and "equals" with math symbols, too! Next week, we will begin focusing on numbers 11-20 in our math lessons. At home, you can help by helping your child practice writing numbers 11-20. See which numbers he/she can recognize out of sequence (try flashcards).

Where's That Turkey?!?

You'd never believe that these are turkeys...look at these fantastic disguises! The Peeps were excited to share their turkeys with their friends today. We didn't get to share all of them yet, so more pictures are coming. But these turkeys have now joined those from other classrooms in our hallway turkey farm. We are seeing some pretty amazing disguises! (We also enjoyed reading the book Turkey Trouble, where a silly turkey comes up with lots of farmyard disguises to avoid his fate as Thanksgiving dinner!)
