Weekly Peep Report

Happy Friday, Kindergarten Families!

We've continued working hard to build our routines and procedures in Kindergarten! I am so very proud of the way that the children are coming into the classroom each day, unpacking their binder, putting their lunch choice on our lunch graph, and choosing a take-home book. We have a group of very responsible Peeps! Thank you for taking time to read our Weekly Report...there's a lot going on!

Kindergarten Weekly Report
 September 4, 2014

Please remember that there is no school on Monday, September 7

Each evening, please check your child's binder for papers and other important information. Take out classwork papers, and talk with your child about his/her work. We're working hard to use a good pencil grip and follow directions on papers.

ABC's and 123's:
Reading: We're singing "Hands Up for Letter Sounds" as we read the alphabet chart each day. We emphasize the letter sound along with each letter name. We have focused on letters E, F, G, and H this week. When we read our "old favorite" big books together, we locate letters we know, count how many words are on the page, make predictions about what will happen in the story, and find words we know (the, see). Remember that the "old favorites" are books that we've already read previously just for fun...so now we can really study them!

We've also been reading different versions of "The Little Red Hen" and talking about how the Little Red Hen was beginning with the end in mind: she wanted to make bread. Today we loved reading The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, and making our own pizzas! We used shapes for the toppings, and counted how many we had of each type. Then we figured out what was the most, and what was the least. This was complicated for this time of year, but our Peeps are SMART! They could do it!

Math: We have focused on counting objects in a group. We can move them into a line, so that we are sure to count each one. We've been counting to 20, focusing carefully on 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. It seems that those are the numbers that can most often be skipped, especially 14, 15, and 16. Wednesday was a very exciting day when we celebrated the 10th day of school. Zero the Hero came for a visit, and told us all about how "0" is a very important number! Without 0, we would only have numbers 1-9. To make 10, you need a 1 and a 0. Zero brought us special "0" snacks with math power!

Social Studies: We've been talking about how to make a friend, and how to be a friend during our Social Studies lessons this week. Each morning, we start our Morning Meeting by shaking hands with the friends on either side of us and saying, "Good morning, (name)." Sometimes we don't remember everyone's name, but we know that it's OK to ask. I love the eye contact that I see when friends are talking to each other, and I'm seeing Peeps get braver with asking one another to play! During our "Dance Party" times (when we need a short break to move around), we really loved "Pop See Ko" on GoNoodle.com. I was very proud of how many children volunteered to say, "My hands are high, my feet are low, and this is how I Pop See Ko!" (Then they show us their dance.) It was AWESOME!!

Writing Workshop: **Writers use pictures, letters, and words when they write. **"When we are done, we have just begun." These are the big ideas in our Writing Workshop. The biggest way that you can help your budding writer is to help them recognize writing topics that are all around them. When your child does something that he/she is excited about, or starts telling you about the things he/she knows, say, "You could write about that!" At this point, developing ideas is the difference between writing a story and drawing a picture. I'm excited that the children love sharing their stories, and are such polite listeners when their friends are sharing!

Science: It's hot enough to melt crayons outside! We know that for a fact! The Peeps came in from lunch recess today saying that the tops of their heads were very hot, so we decided to figure out how hot it was. We put crayons on a paper plate, and checked on them after 90 minutes. They were all melted and gooey! In our first science lessons, we're building our powers of observation. Scientists observe the world all around them, and tell others about it!

Counseling: Our kindergarten counselor is Mrs. Maggi Geisz. She came today at 2:30 for her first classroom visit. She will come every other week to talk with us about making and keeping friendships, career choices, and other amazing topics. Today we had a pretend picnic! It was fun to meet her. She told us "Mrs. Geisz is nice." "Geisz" rhymes with "nice." That's how we can remember how to say her name!
