Last week was Fire Safety Week! Did you know that Fire Safety Week is always celebrated the week of October 8, due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871? The fire was blamed on a cow that kicked over a lantern in a barn, though later the reporter admitted to making that up. We are Kindergarten fire safety experts! The Peeps will be the first ones to tell you to please be sure to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. The Crestwood Fire Chief told us that they should be replaced once a year.
If you haven't signed up for a Parent/Teacher conference on October 26 or 28, please use the link below. Thanks!
Keep reading at home! I'm excited to see so many good reading goals. Several of the children have earned a Halloween smelly sticker already, for reading 10 books. Every 10th book, we get a big smelly sticker to add to our "counting by 10's" page.
THIS THURSDAY IS A PAJAMA DAY. We're studying "Nighttime" this week, and we have lots of nighttime activities planned.
Kindergarten Weekly Report
October 13, 2015
ABC's and 123's
Reading: This week we started focusing on lowercase letters, and especially how you form them "the kindergarten way."
Please keep practicing our sight words. I sent flash cards home on Friday to help. (The more you find them in books that you're reading, the more solidly your child will master them. We practice our sight words all the time!)
Math: In our math lessons, we've been counting objects carefully, transferring information to a ten frame, and making a mark on an item to show it's been counted. We're also working with shape blocks to create complicated designs with hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, squares, and triangles. We're using the names of the shapes when we design things, too!
Science: Fire Safety was the highlight of our week! We know ALL about Fire Safety! Ask your child about batteries, "stop drop, and roll," "stay low and go," and "find two ways out." We know that we can use our five senses to determine if we're safe. We've learned about what firefighters do. During the visit from the Crestwood Fire Department, we were even able to sit in the driver's seat in the firetruck, and then spray the hose! Outside in our hallway, you will see a project that we made: we created a scene with buildings, people, and fire fighters. The Peeps practiced their cutting skills, and their creativity! They did such a fantastic job! I am so proud!
Writing Workshop: During our Writer's Workshop times these past few days, we've been sharing our work, and then adding more details to make sure our readers can read our stories. We're looking back at our old stories to find ways to make them even better! (In our folders, we have one side for finished stories, and one side for works in progress.) We're planning our stories before we write them. That's an important skill! Later in the week, we'll be writing "teaching books," to tell others about things we know a lot about!
