We just completed another great week of learning! I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy your children on their half day! The weather has been perfect in the afternoons for playing outside! The Peeps enjoyed the leadership assembly on Friday morning!Conferences are coming soon (October 26 and 28)! Thank you to those of you that have confirmed a time. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to talk with you about your child's progress! Please know that our conference time is only 15 minutes long, and I will need to stay on schedule. If we feel that more time is needed, I am happy to arrange that with you. Report cards will be emailed to you from the district this week, most likely on Tuesday. If you have any questions that cannot wait until our conference, please let me know. I'd be happy to talk with you. (For first quarter, we don't mark a specific grade. Instead, we mark areas that need improvement, like we did on the progress report. Then there's a comment area on the report card to give you specific information on your child's progress. Our grades for second-fourth quarter are "Exceeds Expectations," "Meets Expectations," "Still Developing," and "Area of Concern." That's just for your future reference.) Our class Halloween party will be on Thursday, October 29th. Thanks to Mrs. Clarke for volunteering to organize the party for our class, and to all of the parents helping out, or planning to join us! Just a reminder that snacks and treats must be store bought, but they are not required to be individually wrapped. PLEASE be sure to have them approved by the nurse anytime up to the day before the party.
Kindergartners love Halloween and really get excited about it! As they are getting costumes planned, please remember that they must be appropriate for school, with no weapons or makeup. Also, be sure to send them to school in a bag on the day of the party. Each piece should be marked with your child's name! We will have lots of costumes in our room, and we don't want any pieces left behind! Thank you for your help!
The Scholastic Book Fair is starting later this week, and runs through October 29. You can plan to visit the book fair during school hours, or on conference night, or even on party day. That's the best way for you to purchase books. You could also plan a lunch date with your child, and shop then! Our class lunch time is 11:45.
Kindergarten Weekly Report
October 18, 2015
ABC's and 123's
Reading: This week we've focused on letters d, e, and f. We're working hard to become letter sound masters; we use letter sounds when reading and writing. They are very important! In our shared reading lesons, we've been reading lots of fiction and non-fiction books about nighttime! We've made predictions about whether or not a book is fiction or non-fiction, and then read to find out if we were right. The boys and girls did a wonderful job working with Mrs. Schnitker when I was out with my sick daughter. (I hope the germs are staying away from your house!)
Math: We're reviewing the four basic shapes in our math lessons and activities (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle) and learning new ones (hexagon, octagon, trapezoid). We're continuing our practice with numbers to 10, with counting objects in a line and in a group. We've learned strategies to count numbers carefully: you can move them to be in a line, or you can mark them off as you count if they're on paper. Zero the Hero visited us on Friday! Can you believe that it was the 40th day of school?!
Science: We've been excited to learn all about nighttime! We have compared objects in the night sky to objects in the day sky.
