Welcome Back to School!

Hello, Kindergarten Families!

I hope that you've enjoyed the holidays with your family, and that you've been able to stay dry during the historic rain and flooding that we experienced in our area. Thankfully, the water levels are now receding a little, and the highways are open. I'm looking forward to seeing the children tomorrow! I've missed them!

Projects and Special Days:
These dates are a month or more away, but I think it helps to have lots of lead time on home projects. Here are some special fun days and projects that are coming in February:
On February 1, we'll celebrate the 100th day of school in many fun ways! One way is with a special fashion show! Plan to help your child design a special 100th day shirt. With your child, decide on what the shirt will look like. Then count, sort, and arrange 100 items on a shirt. Here are some ideas to get you started!

Tips:
*Feel free to use an old shirt; this is most likely a "wear it once" project.
*Don't put anything sharp on the shirt, and don't use food items. This is a regular school day, and we have all of our regular activities to do.
*Make sure that the shirt is comfortable to wear all day, and that items are firmly affixed. (Some of the ideas that you see, when you search for 100 day shirts, are NOT comfortable or safe...like 100 plastic army guys--OUCH! Or 100 safety pins--OUCH!)
*Be sure to let your child help...this is a great way to practice counting to 100!

We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12. Our party will be from 2:00-3:00 that day, but we will exchange valentines before that time. Please send a Valentine mailbox to school with your child on February 12, as well as valentines for each classmate. You can make a mailbox from a tissue box, or shoebox, or other items at home, or purchase an inexpensive one for your child to use. (Check the dollar stores!) Be sure that the mailbox is roughly shoebox sized, so that it will hold all of the cards and treats from friends. It's a wonderful learning experience for your child to write all of the valentines by himself/herself. Pace yourself, and have your child fill out just a few each night for several nights. Not only does your child get to practice writing names, but also using a checklist! Those are important life skills! (The children are so much prouder when they fill out their cards themselves, and they are able to pass them out much more easily, because they've practiced learning their friends' names.)

Thank you for your time and effort on these projects! I hope that you'll have fun with them!
