Weekly Peep Report

Happy Sunday, Kindergarten Families!

We're excited that October is here, and we're already counting the days until Halloween!

We're going to be learning all about Fire Safety during the upcoming week. The Crestwood Fire Department is going to visit on Tuesday. Please have your child wear his/her class T-shirt, or "Peep shirt." We're expecting those to be delivered tomorrow at some point during the day. (Keep your fingers crossed!)

Parent Conferences are coming up at the end of October. Please look for an email soon to sign up for a conference time. You can also use the link below. I am looking forward to meeting with you!

I am so impressed with the reading that you're doing with your children at home! Please keep it up! October reading log pages are in binders, if you haven't seen those already. (I know that the lines on the back got messed up. I'm sorry about that! I'll do better on the November page!) Be sure to set a reading goal with your child. Your goal should be at least 10 books...preferably more! It's OK to revise your goal as you go!

Kindergarten Weekly Report

 October 4, 2015

ABC's and 123's

Reading: This week we've focused on letters uvwxand y. We're working on letter sounds a lot these days, in addition to letter identification. Please practice with your child often, as this will build speed and confidence! We've also been reading our sight words, and locating them in books daily. Practicing sight words is KEY to reading success in kindergarten. When the Peeps know their sight words quickly, they will be able to figure out the unknown word in a sentence and not worry about sight words. (For example, they'll be able to read "I see the" without any problem, and they can focus on the word that comes at the end of that phrase.) We completed our first full week with Guided Reading groups, and Mrs. Carroll and I are excited about what the children can do. We're working hard in Literacy Stations to make good learning choices while other friends are reading with a teacher.

Math: In math, we've been working on numbers to 10 and making patterns! We're working with a buddy during Math Workshop, and using our math skills to play games in the math drawers. I'm seeing small groups during this time, so that all of the children are working on the skills that they need to practice.

Science: We've been learning all about our five senses this week. We know that our brains get messages from our eyes, ears, hands, noses, and tongues. That's the way that we learn about the world! We have a "Five Senses" song that we learned, we made brain hats, and we tricked our tongues with sugar and salt. I think the children most enjoyed the "Fish Flip Sticks" that we made. It was so amazing to see the fish suddenly appear in the bowl!

Writing Workshop: When writers work together, they can plan their stories even better than they can when they work alone! We practiced telling our story to a friend before writing it down, and using a storyteller voice to make it exciting. We make a plan for our pages, and then start writing. The Peeps are very excited to write, and they have some terrific stories! This week, we chose one of our favorite stories to put on our "gallery" bulletin board in the classroom! Ask your child what they're writing during Writer's Workshop time!

There are lots of exciting October events coming up. Just take a look!
