Starting Soon!

Kindergarten is only a few weeks away! It's time to start getting ready! If you've gotten your supplies from our school website, or the office, that is fine. But if you haven't, here's a "tweaked" list that may save you money if you haven't done your shopping yet. (I have some extra supplies, and don't need a full classroom set of some items. But if you've purchased them already, please send them. We'll use them this year.) I also wanted to explain a little about how you can help your child get his/her supplies all ready for school, and give you a little information about why these things are needed. If you have any questions at all, please contact me.

Supplies for our classroom:

*Backpack (not rolling)
Be sure that the backpack you choose is not too small. Sometimes the smaller ones won't hold our binders. Be sure that your child's name is on the backpack somewhere. If your child would like to have a water bottle at school, be sure that there is a side pocket or pouch to hold it. Water bottles are not allowed inside backpacks; you'd be surprised at how often they leak and ruin library books!

*Kindermat (optional)
Each day after lunch, we will have a brief "Rest and Recharge" time in Kindergarten. Students who need to "rest" will have that opportunity, but others will be able to look at books, use classroom iPads, work on puzzles, play quiet games, and "recharge." We use Kindermats during this time, so that everyone has their own space in the classroom. If you feel that your child would use one, please purchase a mat that folds into fourths...that makes it very easy to put in our cubbies. Homemade mats, yoga mats, and other types won't work, as they won't store upright in the cubby.

*Plastic pencil box (5x8)
Please do not buy pencil boxes that have a latch or zipper. They just don't hold up as well as the basic pencil box. (And these "toolboxes," as I call them at school, are not the super skinny toolboxes. We use them to hold our markers, pencils, and scissors. You can open those items to put in the toolbox; that helps me tremendously!) Please write your child's name on the bottom of the box. Don't worry about labeling the sides or the top.

*(or more) glue sticks (Please open and put one in your child's toolbox. No need to label.)

*1 box washable watercolor markers (Please get regular size, classic colors--make sure there is a red, blue, yellow, green, brown, black, purple, orange, pink. Markers can be washable or not, the 8 pack or 10 pack.) (Do not open these, but be sure to label the package with your child's name.)

*Black, green, and purple felt tip pens (optional) These will be used for Writer's Workshop this year.

*1 pair of Fiskars scissors (Please label with your child's name. Personally, I like the Fiskars scissors that do have a tip; some are rounded on the ends. Either ones will work. Put the scissors in your child's toolbox.)

*2 boxes of 24 crayons (One box goes in toolbox, one box turned in to me. No need to label.)

*Clorox wipes

*Kleenex (optional) I don't need everyone to bring this, but would appreciate some.

*$5 in an envelope labeled "instructional magazines." Don't forget to write your child's name also.

*$3 in an envelope labeled "writer's workshop." Please include your child's name.

Not needed (I have some of these supplies already, you don't need to buy them. However, if you did buy them, please go ahead and bring them to school. We'll use them!)

Elmer's glue
watercolor paints
plain pencils
paper towels
ziplock bags

Other items on the school supply list:

Art- markers (please label "ART")
Music- anti-bacterial wipes (please label "MUSIC")
P.E.- one pair laced tennis shoes (This means that you need to have your child wear laced or velcro tennis shoes to school each day that we have P.E. or Health. I will let you know what days those will be. You don't need to plan to have extra shoes to keep at school; each year this item confuses some parents.)
Technology- 1 box Kleenex
1 box Kleenex and 1 box Ziplock bags to share with library, nurse, math, and reading specialists.

Thank you for the time you're spending to be sure your child is ready for school!
